An on-again-off-again sunny Saturday afternoon here in London – still cold but with an ever so slight feel of spring in the air – presents a perfect time to sip February’s Wine of the Month. A crisp and honeysuckle-y white wine made with organically grown grapes in the clay-limestone soils of Burgundy, Bret Brothers 2006 Mâcon-Cruzille (£12.55/bottle or £11.30/unsplit orders of 12) is taking the edge off an especially busy (and rather stressful) week in a most deliciously effective way.
This complex and saffron-tasting wine is also providing me the chance to give Berry Bros & Rudd’s Wine and Music idea a go. So, I’m sipping along to one of my all-time favourite albums – Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps, (Spotify link here) – and finding it to be a most pleasant match. The floral and multilayered notes of the Mâcon-Cruzille delightfully accentuate the harmonica and acoustic guitar playing on songs like Sail Away while still holding up to rockers on the album such as Welfare Mothers (diiiiii-vooooor-ceeeee!) and Sedan Delivery. The nine-song set of classics that is Rust Never Sleeps has been pleasing my eardrums since I was a teen. I reckon I’ll still be enjoying the hell out of it for rest of my life. Like fine wine, Mr Young’s music ages well. As for the Mâcon-Cruzille, I wouldn’t be against it keeping me and Neil company and rockin’ my palate for years to come.
