The garage is usually looked down upon as just a place where you keep your car safe from the rain, snow and other weather conditions. Not many people consider this particular part of the house to be one of a major significance for the household and its members besides just being some spare space designed for the sole purpose of keeping your vehicle in it. However, the family car most usually has other, in most cases, unwanted redundant ‘roommates’. In other words – useless junk or simply old objects which family members never came round to getting rid of and decided to just store in the garage for the time being. Often, this time is prolonged to months, even years. Thus the garage turns into one huge closet which keeps getting hoarded with stuff. In most cases – up to the point when dad can’t get the car out for work because of all the golf clubs, dolls and piles of magazines that stand in the way. That is when one realizes its high time the garage got cleaned – when the great deal of junk makes getting the car out a tedious handicap. And just like any other part of the house, the first step is realizing that it needs not be postponed anymore, but rather be done as soon as possible. However, you need to bear in mind that the more you postpone and the more stuff you keep stuffing your garage with, the harder it will be to get it cleaned and put in order.
If you prefer to waste as little energy as possible and fulfill the task headache-free, try and thoroughly clean he garage AT LEAST once a year. And employ all the family members. Try and turn it into a family-team chore, rather than making your children do it, for it will take them way too long. A smart thing to do would be fixing a Saturday/Sunday for the assignment, a day when usually all of the family members are free from school/work. However, if you don’t feel like getting your hands dirty, the best option for keeping yourself out of the cleaning business would be to hire a cleaning company to do the job for you. No doubt there are dozens of reliable cleaning companies in your area, and it only takes a couple of minutes on the Internet to find the one that suits you best.
If, on the other hand, you decide to manage it all by yourself, you should follow these simple steps:
1.Get EVERYTHING out of the garage.
In order to give it a proper clean, get all items out. For starters, neatly sweep the floor and get rid of all the cobwebs in the corners. After that proceed with thoroughly scrubbing the floor. Scrubbing the walls is optional but a good idea. Once the garage is clean, proceed to…
2.Dispose of the objects you don’t need
Start of by dividing the objects that have been lurking around the garage in two – things you need and such that you don’t. The redundant objects you can either give away for charity (if they are clothes or toys) or hold a garage/yard sale with. Don’t jump to the hasty decision of throwing them away. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
3.Put everything in order
The stuff you decide to keep you might want to organize a little. For example, put the boxes of books in one corner, the bags of clothes in another, and so on. Installing shelves is another smart option of acquiring some extra space.
Bearing these advices in mind, you will definitely manage to give your garage the decent look it deserves. But most importantly, don’t forget the golden rule – get rid of what you don’t need and don’t fill your garage with stuff which will most probably never be used.
