O-Food Pop-Up Offers a Healthy, Low-Impact Lunch in Shoreditch

Pop-up sandwich bar, O-Food, has been open for a few weeks and will continue to offer conscientious Shoreditch diners a tasty variety of “low-impact” vegetarian and fish sarnies “with a Nordic twist” until 23 September.

Set up by Jens Hannibal, Daniel Flosser and Roel Philippart, O-Food is an enterprise of shared passion for sustainable food and business. Fish and seafood used for their takeaway only menu are non “Big Five” (haddock, prawns, tuna, cod and salmon) and are sourced from low impact fisheries in Kent along with fresh, locally sourced vegetables from British farms.

Apparently, the fresh-faced and earnestly ethical entrepreneurs behind O-Food have investors lined up should this pop-up trial prove successful. Also according to the trio, customers have been lining up for their offerings as well – with queues out the door a common lunchtime sight. Whether or not sustainable food can mean a sustainable business plan for them is yet to be seen.

I dropped in on their post-soft-launch official launch party a few nights ago and very much enjoyed sampling the O-Food range of sandwiches. I really liked all the ones I tried, but maybe my favourite was the O’Macky (smoked mackerel, romaine, daikon and horseradish dressing on white sourdough, £5).

All the sandwiches cost about a fiver: fishy ones are a little more than five quid while veggie ones come in just under £5. Those are certainly decent prices for a healthy and delicious lunch in Central London. If you’re in Shoreditch and can pay O-Food a visit, they’re definitely worth a try.

O-Food is located at 54 Rivington Street, EC2A 3QN. Find out more o-food.co.uk.
