Maze Grill, Royal Hospital Road, Chelsea

Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road

Another week, another chance to visit another Maze Grill in Chelsea. Or so that’s how things have shaped up here on this blog with Leila Duke’s review last week of Maze Grill Park Walk and now my own write up of another recently opened MG in Chelsea – this one on Royal Hospital Road.

Leila can be a tough critic. So after reading her resounding thumbs-up review of the Park Walk MG, I was keen to respond with a “yes please!” when asked if I might like to swing by the other recently opened Chelsea location to try the menu.

The restaurants (there’s another – the original Maze Grill – in Mayfair … and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of more opening soon) are part of the Gordon Ramsay Group and offer upscale comfort with a low-key vibe for when you want to go but can’t be too fussed about it. I loved the concept and enjoyed most of what I sampled during my visit to the Royal Road outlet … and pined that there’s not an MG nearer my East End home.

Highlights included the scrummy and nicely priced (for Chelsea anyway) Buffalo chicken fillets small plate (£4); USDA Prime sirloin (£3.40/oz); Wagyu triple seared fillet (£14.50/oz); and a good selection of sushi and sashimi; and yummy sides along the lines of massive onions rings (£5) and mac & cheese (£5). Steaks were amped up with especially savoury bone marrow and shallot sauce (£2). I’d go back (and hope to soon) for a chance to chow down on the short rib burger (with bacon, cheese, onion and pickle, £14). Desserts such as Eton mess (£6) and monkey bread (with pecans and vanilla ice cream, £12 to share) were a fun treat – as were the selection of wines I sampled. I especially appreciated a glass of Kung Fu Girl Reisling from Charles Smith Wines (Columbia Valley, Washington).

As Leila so succinctly put it, Maze Grill is “somewhere you will want to go more than once in awhile.” That’s certainly how I’m feeling now I’m among the initiated.

Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road is located at 79 Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4HN. Find out more about it and the other Maze Grill outlets at mazegrill.co.uk.
