Mia in Mauritius: Elena’s Top Three

Elena

Continuing with her … in Mauritius series, Mia shares her travelling companion Elena’s top three highlights from their trip.

Always with her Canon camera, passionate about travel, sailing and sports – and still single at the time of publication – my friend Elena’s top three to-d0 list for Mauritius is an active and outdoorsy one. Let’s have a look:

SailingBoat

Sailing Tour to Coin de Mire

If sailing and snorkeling rocks your boat, there are plenty of tour operators offering day trips to various islands, often including drinks and BBQ lunch.
We actually made it to Trouc d’Eau Douce one morning, a village in the East where many tours depart.

The weather was not too promising on arrival and the idea of being perched together with other twenty strangers did not appeal to us. So we gave it a miss. Instead, Bernard the property manager of Villa Agena, kindly offered us a tour on his sailing boat the next day. Elena had a blast, jumping, ducking and climbing around deck, helping with the sails.

We stopped at Coin de Mire, where we snorkeled, had our packed lunches washed down with beers and even had a bit of a swim. I am sure the organised tours are very enjoyable too but for us, Bernard’s sailing boat was a more fun way to get around.

RoadTrip

Road Trip Along the East Coast

Starting from our villa near Roche Noirs, we drove along the coast to Souillac. With its rugged coastline, local fishermen houses and drive through parts of a Nature Reserve, we agreeing that this part of the island must be one of the most beautiful.

Along the way we passed historic points such as Anciennes Batteries Francaises (French canon point) and Ruines du Vieux Grand Port (entry point of the Dutch in 1638). This tour offered great insight to how life is away from the glamour of resorts and private beaches.

Tip: Make sure you leave with a full tank to avoid unnecessary stress we experienced.

Paddle Boarding

Villa Agena provided us with a Stand Up Paddle Board that became a daily activity. I am sure Elena could tell you more about the actual benefits of paddle boarding, but aside from those it was a fun way to get past the shallow waters and have a proper swim.
