Mia in Mauritius: Her Top Three

LocalBus2

Mia’s back with another post about her recent trip to Mauritius.

My top 3 seem more of practical nature than those of Elena and Julia as that seems to have become my favourite word since having a child.

Afternoon Cocktail on Our Front Porch

We spent most days exploring the island (or shopping) and being able to dive into the sea as soon we returned and relax with drinks on our porch while being able to watch Kai playing in the shallow waters was an indulgence I very much treasure.

Grand Baie

Situated on the North coast, Grand Baie is a rather touristic town with souvenir shops, bars/restaurants along the beach and nightclubs (so we hear). I loved it for the local fishermen at the end of the car park, the only car park at the seafront.

Every day from 1pm, we saw fishermen coming in at different times selling their catch of the day. There were also a variety of street food stalls along the seafront selling typical Mauritian snacks such as dholl pouris (Indian like flatbread stuffed with ground yellow split peas, and served in a pair with bean curry, atchar and chutney.)

Tip: You find the biggest, and my favorite, Super U supermarket in Grand Baie.

Flacq Market

Open every Wednesday and Sunday, Flacq Market is an excellent place to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables. Here you can also find a food court where you can sample many local specialties and buy souvenirs at decent prices. My favorite visit to Flacq was when we went to do the shopping for the evening meal with Sylvian, a local who occasionally cooked for us at our villa,. She showed us her favorite stalls and showed us fruits and vegetables that we had never seen before. For those looking for fresh fish, at Flacq fish is available from 11am. Availability of fish is very time dependent and differs from town to town.
