BTW, It’s British Tomato WeekOooh mommy! Look at these luscious tomato dishes! Recipes by (clockwise from top left) chefs Agnar Sverrisson, Marcello Tully, Anna Hansen, Marcus Wareing, and Frances Atkins.

Did you know this week – 16 to 22 May – is British Tomato Week? In my opinion, anytime is a good time to celebrate this much loved superfood, but since it is BTW, now seems like an especially fruitful opportunity to take a fresh look at some of the yummiest ways to enjoy such a versatile food. No matter how you slice it, tomatoes are great.

Whether it’s a comforting bowl of tomato soup to warm you up on a cold winter’s day or a zesty and refreshing gazpacho to help you cool you down during a summer scorcher, tomatoes provide an ideal mix of flavour, nutrition and comfort. From laying on the extra yum of passata when preparing your preferred pasta to applying an essential layer of thick cut fresh tomato in hopes of constructing the ultimate BLT, tomatoes go a long way to bolster the flavour of any number of delicious dishes. I mean, just imagine your burger or side of chips without a squirt of ketchup to complete it! The horror.

But soup, pasta, sarnies, burgers, chips – those represent a merely cursory view of the myriad ways tomatoes assist in rounding out a meal, either as the main ingredient or an umami-adding sidekick. Popular go-to recipe site, Great British Chefs, features a juicy assortment of tomato recipes for all tastes and levels of cookery aptitude.

From GBC’s Tomato Recipe Collection, I love the range of ideas for gazpacho like Agnar Sverrisson’s spicy gazpacho and Marcello Tully’s iced vodka version. There’s Anna Hansen’s Turkish menemen with sumac yoghurt for fans of eggs made with Eastern Med flair too and Marcus Wareing’s elegant crab with heritage tomatoes, aged Parmesan and baby basil for seafood lovers. Looking to cook with kids? Frances Atkins’ tomato soup with cheesy croutons and bubbles is a fun and child-friendly recipe.
