#TasteBaltimore: Modern Cook Shop

Breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day. And my first full day of my Baltimore tour started with a great one at Modern Cook Shop.

Market, bar, and restaurant all-in-one, Modern Cook Shop in the historic yet still really very happening neighbourhood of Fell’s Point was an ideal spot for breakfast.

I was there convening with a small group of other journos from the UK alongside folks from the Visit Baltimore office. We sat at a big table with plenty of natural light and ordered from a succinct menu that nevertheless had on it something more than suitable for everyone’s tastes. The seating, setting and the food were ideal for just such a casual meeting.

For my meal, I went with the House Scrapple on rye loaf with soft eggs, pickles and hot sauce ($10). For those not in the know, scrapple is a Mid Atlantic delicacy made of pork scraps and offal. It’s sort of a mix between a sausage and a meatloaf usually served as thin pan-fried slices. I loved it.

My coffee never reached half full, thanks to our table’s friendly and thoughtful server.

As ace as Modern Cook Shop was for a group brekkie, it would have been just as much so for any size party for any meal. Same goes for evening drinks as well. I was really impressed with the array of beers, wines and spirits on offer. I also admired the range of fresh groceries and meat, artisanal products (hickory syrup?!) and cult and local brand products (Mick’s Gourmet Soup, Domino Sugar) for sell.

Rather upscale and decidedly gentry-centric, Modern Cook Shop still had a homey, welcoming feel and was certainly a pleasant place for any variety of food and drink related endeavours. If I lived in Baltimore, I’m sure I’d stop by regularly for treats, cupboard augmentations and friendly catch-ups.
