Cocktail Masterclasses at Portobello Star

PS Old Fashioned

Alexandra Kalinowski gets crafty with the cocktails at Portobello Star.

Sometimes you just really need a drink. Like when you forget your suitcase in the overhead bin on a plane and hope to God it gets returned to you because, you know, just your life is in there. A shot of vodka, or the bottle would just about calm your nerves.

But most times, you just really want a drink. A craft cocktail, G&T or a glass of wine after a long day at work. Just a little something delicious to wind down in the company of friends. But gone are the days where Sex on the Beach was acceptable, and hello to an avid interest in spirits and methods for building cocktails. Sure, you can sit around and watch YouTube clips on how to make a Negroni 101, 10 steps to becoming a gin connoisseur, or even visit a vineyard in Bordeaux. But who would want to do that when you can learn all the tricks of the trade on Portobello Road?

Enter Portobello Star: the historic bar that’s been serving royals, musicians, beggars and well, normal people since 1740. Specialising in handmade liquors, created by spirit infusions (I’m looking at you Chilli Nutella cognac), the back bar is filled with spirits from all over the world. Upstairs is a private bar known as The Apartment, with cosy tables and chairs overlooking Notting Hill’s famous road. It can be hired for Cocktail Masterclasses, where four cocktails are served (with prices starting at £30 per person). Excuse me? 4 cocktails for pennies. And I get to make them. Where do I sign up?

Well Tuesday evening, still suitcase-less and in desperate need of a drink, I had the chance to meet five other brilliant ladies for a masterclass. On arrival, we were handed a whiskey-based cocktail infused with apple and topped with ‘crème brûlée.’ Honestly, it was comparable to the apple pie at Chicken Shop, which means I could have had the whole batch to myself. That was followed by a Mai Tai that was far too strong (must remember not be so heavy-handed on those ½ and 1 count measures), a margarita and a Negroni.

We had a blast shaking drinks, or maybe it was the boomeranging of the shaking that was the ballin’ bit. Who can even remember after four cocktails… If only we’d ordered food from Patty & Bun or Pix to be delivered to the bar during the night. Because yes, outside food is allowed and can even be coordinated for larger events. But then again, we probably would have never left.

When I head into work next week, I’m designating myself Social Events Coordinator so I can book something ‘educational’ in for the team. But I’d recommend you do the same.

Portobello Star can be found at 171 Portobello Road, W11 2DY. For more information, go to portobellostarbar.co.uk.
