#Paolozzi: Art, Beer, Pizza

Art, beer and pizza! It’s a triumvirate adding up to a good time, especially when the art is amazing, the beer is refreshing and the pizza is yummy. Coinciding with the opening of the excellent Eduardo Paolozzi exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery, the Scottish born artist’s namesake beer – Paolozzi Lager – is making artful headway in London. Liberty Cheesesteak Company: Real Deal Philly Cheesesteak

Finding no satisfaction in London’s “cheesesteak” offerings – or often any resemblance to the mega meaty two-hander sandwiches of Italian-American origin famously from his hometown – JP decided to bring it here himself. Long story short: he ended up having to come up with a recipe for the right kind of bread and even created his own “wiz” cheese sauce. As for the steak, JP was happy enough with already available rib eye, sliced ultra thin for tastiest and most genuinely Philadelphian results. Continue reading

WOMEN: New Portraits by Annie Leibovitz

WOMEN aims to look at the way the roles and notion of womanhood have changed over time. After a shoot with Caitlyn Jenner, Annie describes, “It was like creating a new person, around the idea of what a woman is… what is, who is this new person?” The concept first fascinated her decades past, after shooting Vegas showgirls inside and outside of their makeup. “They were so normal looking [out of costume]… my [showgirl] photos represented how women dressed up to be women.” But what happens when you dress the concept of womanhood down? Continue reading

Forge & Co … and It’s Fabulous Speyside Beef and Ox Heart Burger

A friend (hey Peter!) and I dropped by the Forge & Co canteen in Shoreditch last night to give its new Speyside Beef and Ox Heart Burger a try … and were pleased to have done so. Cooked in a Josper Grill and served on a demi brioche, it proved a mightily meaty meal well worth recommending. Plenty of topping and condiment options were available, but I reckon it needed none such was it so full of flavour. Continue reading

Enjoy a Swedish Christmas Plate at Fika, Brick Lane

It had been a few years since my last visit to Fika Bar & Restaurant before my dinner there last week. The cosy little Scandi eatery at the top of Brick Lane seems to be as popular with the hipster set and as Swedish as it ever was. Never been to Fika or, like me, haven’t been in quite some time? With Xmas on the way and a special Jutallrik menu to celebrate the festive season, now’s a topical time to visit. Continue reading
