Kanada-Ya Adds Gyoza to the Menu

The tonkotsu ramen specialists at Kanada-Ya have added gyoza to the menu. Already a fan of all the other delectable morsels served at this Japan restaurant’s three London outlets, I was keen to have a taste of the most recent addition as soon as possible. Continue reading

Kanada-Ya | #TCTalks Episode 15

Japan’s legendary Kanada-Ya has just launched its third ramen bar in London. This one’s on Upper Street near Angel Station. I think the generous bowls of ramen served at Kanada-Ya’s St Giles High Street and Panton Street branches are some of the yummiest things to slurp in town – and are well worth braving the sometimes rather lengthy queues to have. I love the classic tonkotsu (pork bone broth, chashu pork belly, wood ear fungus, seaweed and spring onion) with my noodles served “hard” (there’s a choice of soft, regular, hard and extra hard) with loads of grated sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Continue reading

Michael Thompson’s Fodder at Borough Wines & Beer

If you’re like me and find yourself channelling your inner child in a candy store upon entering a wine shop, Borough Wines & Beers won’t disappoint. After shaking off the rain droplets and calming my breath post my mad dash into their Islington shop, I warmed in the rather intimate store. Perusing the shelves lined with British red and whites, I indulged my current natural wine obsession whose flavour ever evolves once the cork has been unscrewed. I’d describe it as a luxurious walk-in closet, which simply adds to the charm and intrigue of what lies below … Continue reading

Sakura: Adam Rawson Japanese Pop-Up at Borough Wines & Beers

Sakura refers to the celebration of cherry blossoms in Japan. It’s also the name of a pop-up at the Essex Road outlet of Borough Wines & Beers featuring an outstanding assortment of dishes by Chef Adam Rawson paired with sake, beer, wine and cocktails – and like Japan’s famous cherry blossoms, this beautiful opportunity will be gone before you know it. Best London Pop-Ups, Supper Clubs, Street Food, etc in 2016

This year, many of my favourite London meals didn’t occur at a traditional restaurant or via a kitchen with a permanent address. Keeping with current dining trends and continuing with my Best of 2016 series, here’s my list of Best London Pop-Ups, Takeovers, Supper Clubs etc of the year. Continue reading

Beiriso Updated

One of the first eateries I reviewed this year was Beiriso near Holborn Station. The takeaway café with a menu focused on reasonably priced, freshly made and quickly served sushi and pasta invited me back recently for another taste after rearranging the dining area and giving it a refurb and honing in on the best aspects of their kitchen. Tasty Pacific Treats at Tombo Poké and Matcha Bar, Soho

That poké is now ‘a thing’ in London is weird one for me – and seems kinda random. There are at least three eateries (that I know of) now open in town with poké as the main menu item. It’s “the next ceviche” I’ve been told (more than a few times) when I mention that I think this trend is odd. Continue reading

Kanada-Ya Panton Street

Building upon the success of its first London outpost, the new Kanada-Ya Panton Street brings authentic tonkatsu ramen to the west side of Theatreland with plenty more space than at its ultra popular sister site just east in St Giles. Heck, they’ll even let ya book a table (if your party’s big enough) at this newest venture of the small but oh so slurp-tastic global group of famed ramen bars (with locations in Japan and Hong Kong). Brighton Bound? Bincho Yakitori for Japanese Grilled Greatness Near the Beach

Yep, the same Bincho that used to grace London’s foodie havens of Soho and Clerkenwell with its simple menu of mostly grilled meats made all the more moreish by a Japanese approach to flavour, style and service is now pleasing palates in cozy little Brighton nook only a few blocks up from the beach. Too bad so sad London, Brighton’s got ya beat this time around. I paid an early evening weekday visit a week or so ago, and had a delightful time sampling my way through the menu – at a fraction of the cost such a exploratory dabble of a meal would set me back here in London. A flight of sake to start things off (the list of Japanese drinks was impressive), followed by a pint of Super Dry Asahi and I was ready for a parade of izakaya hits. Continue reading

Shackfuyu: Japanese Fun Food Pops Up in Soho

The izakaya good times keep rolling with another Bone Daddies opening in Central London. This one, Shackfuyu, is a pop-up in a failed pizzeria on Soho’s Old Compton Street. Is worth a visit? Here’s a nuanced take on the Nippon inspired nosh I tried there last week. Continue reading
