#TCTalks | Episode 4 | Rarotonga

For the fourth episode of tikichris Talks I share some highlights from my September visit to the tiny Polynesian country of the Cook Islands. The episode includes an interview I conducted with master carver Michael Tavioni at his Rarotonga studio, a hymn sung in the language of Cook Island Maori during Sunday morning service at the Cook Islands Christian Church in the village of Titikaveka and the sounds of traditional drumming from a performance at the popular Highland Paradise dinner show in the uplands of Rarotonga. Feeling Fino: Bars and Restaurants in Jerez

I ate, drank and propped up bars with such pleasure during my short stay in Jerez. For a town of hardly more than 200,000 residents and not an overwhelming lot of tourists passing through, there’s an awesome lineup of dynamic restaurants and bars. With memories of authentic Spanish food and drink, served with warmth and pride in evocative settings, my heart (and appetite) remains in Jerez. Continue reading

#BBQbound: Memphis

It had been more than 20 years since I’d last been to Memphis, and I was glad my BBQ Bound road trip passed through it, affording me the chance to reacquaint myself with this fantastic town so prominently set on the banks of the mighty Mississippi. Grillstock London: A Walthamstow Hillbilly’s Homecoming?

So, I was all sorts of messed up this weekend. Not because of the beer (although I had access to copious amounts of it). Or the whiskey (similarly ample volumes were at my disposal). Or the meat (there were mounds of epic proportion). But because, as a judge at the Grillstock BBQ festival in Walthamstow, wave after wave of out-of-context familiarity kept slapping me silly with wafts of hickory smoke, the lilting plink of a banjo here and there, and the sight of thousands of folks come together to celebrate their love of slow and low cooked meat. Continue reading
