Three of the six establishments listed below as my preferred cheap eats are in Zone 1 and extremely easy to access. The other three? Hello Waltham Forest, you big gorgeous borough full of yummy East London treats of reasonable price and generous proportion. Continue reading

Little Feast, Shepherd’s Bush

Little Feast street market has been going strong for almost two months now with about another month to go. I just managed to swing by for the first time last week. Liberty Cheesesteak Company: Real Deal Philly Cheesesteak

Finding no satisfaction in London’s “cheesesteak” offerings – or often any resemblance to the mega meaty two-hander sandwiches of Italian-American origin famously from his hometown – JP decided to bring it here himself. Long story short: he ended up having to come up with a recipe for the right kind of bread and even created his own “wiz” cheese sauce. As for the steak, JP was happy enough with already available rib eye, sliced ultra thin for tastiest and most genuinely Philadelphian results. Continue reading

Gourmet Gorditas at Sunday Upmarket

Gorditas are hand-made Mexican flatbreads made of wheat and stuffed with a yummy filling. Now you can get ‘em in London thanks to Pedro and Santiago, a couple of enterprising Mexicans who recently started traded under the name Gourmet Gorditas with a stall selling their gourmet versions of this Northern Mexican street food at Brick Lane’s Sunday Upmarket. Charcoal Brioche Chakalaka: Better Breads at Bunnychow

Bunny who?In case you’ve yet to get hip to this SA street food phenom, Bunnychow (the place, one word) serves bunny chow (traditional street food from Durban, two words). A “bunny” is a freshly baked bun hollowed out and “crammed” with hot fillings and topped with a bread lid (which serves as an excellent sopper-upper once you’re close to the bottom of your bunny). Best London Bars and Pubs of 2015

London has been a great place to drink for many a year. This year, for me, it seemed even better than before. My favourite watering holes continued to please while a handful of new or bars and pubs otherwise previously unknown to me caught my attention with great service, comfy digs and – most importantly – quality quaffs. Roam Around Rome: The City’s Best Street Food (Great Italian Chefs)

As is the case throughout Italy, I’m sure that Rome has an excellent restaurant and fine dining scene. The Bell & Brisket Kitchen Takeover at The Barley Mow, Shoreditch

I’ve known Bel Shapiro – owner of The Bell & Brisket – for a number of years now and have been a fan of her “seriously pimped up salt beef bagels” all the while. I’ve also very much admired how she’s resisted any trendy urges to “go burger” along with the hipster tide and rather has looked to more local gourmand traditions to come up with something yummy that’s no less “street” and certainly just as zeitgeist-y as any other London grub you’re apt to sink your teeth into.
