Liberty Cheesesteak Company: Real Deal Philly Cheesesteak

Finding no satisfaction in London’s “cheesesteak” offerings – or often any resemblance to the mega meaty two-hander sandwiches of Italian-American origin famously from his hometown – JP decided to bring it here himself. Long story short: he ended up having to come up with a recipe for the right kind of bread and even created his own “wiz” cheese sauce. As for the steak, JP was happy enough with already available rib eye, sliced ultra thin for tastiest and most genuinely Philadelphian results. Continue reading

Gourmet Gorditas at Sunday Upmarket

Gorditas are hand-made Mexican flatbreads made of wheat and stuffed with a yummy filling. Now you can get ‘em in London thanks to Pedro and Santiago, a couple of enterprising Mexicans who recently started traded under the name Gourmet Gorditas with a stall selling their gourmet versions of this Northern Mexican street food at Brick Lane’s Sunday Upmarket. A Myriad of Marks: Dragica Carlin at Lollipop Gallery

Bubbles and bulk white walls greeted me, as The Lollipop Gallery provided its typical minimalist space to showcase the art. Set across two floors of industrialist space with plank wooden floors and the smell of sawdust, the intimate gallery has the feel of wandering into a painter’s study, rather than an exhibition of work. That personal tone was further set by there being no plaquards asride any of Carlin’s pieces, no Titles or information on mediums, a rare treat that invited guests to use their senses to understand and analyse the abstract works. Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London #TowerPoppies

I dropped by the Tower of London late this afternoon to check out the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation comprised of hundreds of thousands of ceramic poppies “planted” to mark the centenary of World War One. There are only a few days left to view the installation by ceramicist Paul Cummins of Derbyshire at the Tower. After Remembrance Day (Wednesday 11 November), all 888,246 poppies will be picked by volunteers and sent to poppy purchasers. Continue reading

Enjoy a Swedish Christmas Plate at Fika, Brick Lane

It had been a few years since my last visit to Fika Bar & Restaurant before my dinner there last week. The cosy little Scandi eatery at the top of Brick Lane seems to be as popular with the hipster set and as Swedish as it ever was. Never been to Fika or, like me, haven’t been in quite some time? With Xmas on the way and a special Jutallrik menu to celebrate the festive season, now’s a topical time to visit. Continue reading

Would You Eat a Goanut?

I went on a lark to check out a gimmick and got hooked on an excellent seasonal menu at what might be London’s most underrated restaurant. What’s a goanut you ask? It’s a gourmand gateway to a fine foodie feast. Try it at the Brasserie at the Tower Hotel. Continue reading
