Next up on the currywurst front is the Berlin classic: Konnopke’s Imbiss.
Set beneath an elevated U-Bahn track, this East Berlin takeaway has been serving affordable street food with a kick since 1930.
Compared to the other currywurst shops I visited, Konnopke’s sauce was tastier and spicier (with the option of even hotter sauces). Prices were delectable as well. I paid €4 for currywurst with fries, ketchup and mayonnaise. It drove me a little crazy how most places in Germany charge extra for ketchup and mayo, but I still couldn’t complain with the prices.
I loved my lunch at Konnopke’s: efficient service, minimal cost for an ample portion of tasty food, the rumble of the trains overhead, a chance to people watch in one of Berlin’s more colourful neighbourhoods (Prenzlauer Berg) while chowing down on something yummy at a picnic table.
For the epitome of urban eating, think Konnopke’s.
Konnopke’s Imbiss is located at Schönhauser Allee 44B, 10435 Berlin. Find out more at konnopke-imbiss.de.
