Wine of the Month: 2007 Château Marsau, Côtes de Francs

I love it when one blog post segues nicely into another. In this case my recipe review of Marcus Wareing’s cheeseburgers presented a tasty excuse to pop open this month’s WOTM, 2007 Château Marsau, Côtes de Francs.

Best enjoyed with food, the medium bodied, dry Bordeaux worked wonders alongside my burgers and some other dishes, including a dark chocolate brownie for dessert. With any number of dishes traditionally served with red wine, I can imagine the 2007 Château Marsau would hold its own through a few courses without distracting from the meal.

No one’s going to be offended by this crowd pleaser either. Kind of like a toned down classic Bordeaux or a slightly revved up claret – with notes of plum, summer berries and vanilla – it’s a great red wine for adding a bit of pizzazz to an otherwise low key meal and is a smart one to take with you next time you’re a dinner guest.

Right now’s a brill time to buy it too. Originally £15.25 a bottle, Berry Bros & Rudd has recently dropped the price to £10.95 per single bottle (from £15.25).

For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

UPDATE: UH OH! Apparently, this wine’s such a winner that it’s completely sold out at Berry Bros & Rudd. But I’ve been told there’s plenty of the 2006 in stock and available at £14.75 per bottle. Berry’s notes on the 2006 Château Marsau, Côtes de Francs make for a compelling read as well. It might even be a better buy than the 07!
