Cutesy and massive mosaics of sweet lil baby tiger cubs, kittens and ducklings. Probably not what you’d expect to see at one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious art fairs. But Farhad Moshiri’s gigantic and kitsch works were just what contemporary Middle Eastern art gallery, The Third Line, opted to display at last year’s Frieze Art Fair here in London. I had lots of favourites meandering round the 09 Frieze. And with a 2010 press accreditation recently landing in my inbox, I’ve been remembering how much I enjoyed last year’s event. Moshiri’s pieces were especially memorable. By injecting a welcome dose of low brow kitsch into the mix of otherwise haughty and high brow artsy fartsy pieces of art, he and The Third Line ensured the fair wouldn’t be taken too seriously.
Since the fair, I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on The Third Line’s website and have even looked into the possibility of booking some cheap flights to Dubai and Dubai hotel options to check out an exhibition or two at their Dubai and Doha locations. With all that Dubai offers (the tallest building in the world, the world’s only seven star hotel … there are even three Trader Vic’s!), it seems like the sort of place that I need to visit at least once in my life. And if The Third Line is any indication of what the art scene’s like, well, I have a feeling there’d be plenty of phenomenal art for me to take a gander at.
