Check this out: SONY presents 3D tennis. Yes, for the first time ever, Wimbledon will be filmed and screened live in 3D direct to cinemas around the world. Personally, I’m loving all this 3D cinema action these days. Avatar left me longing for return to Pandora, Pina helped me realize that 3D doesn’t have to be just something for the kids and now with this major sporting event being filmed in 3D, every forehand, smash and volley can be viewed by tennis fans as if they were right there. Says Fujio Nishida, President of Sony Europe, of watching Wimbleon in 3D: “Watching tennis in High Definition 3D is a stunning experience, bringing the speed of the action and emotions of the occasion to life; it is as close to the atmosphere and excitement of Centre Court as actually being there.”
This sounds like a great way to watch the tournament! And I reckon the folks behind the technology at SONY have served an ace. I mean, even if you’re not a tennis enthusiast, who can argue against the thought of Sharapova (or whomever player you might fancy) in 3D?
When it’s done right, I think 3D can enrich a viewers experience and add a bit of “make.believe” to any story: be it a fantasy set on some far flung planet, a documentary about a famous and influential dancer or the compelling drama of world class athletes competing against each other. Would you enjoy watching your favourite sports in this manner? Think this move to 3D is just a fad or here to stay?

Hadn’t thought about tennis being something that would be shown in 3d. Football is a far more obvious choice to me. But hey, might be good
