For a city of only about 200,000 people, Basel boasts more museums than cities with more than ten times its population. From the Anatomical Museum of the University of Basel (which was founded by Professor Carl Jung – yes, the Carl Jung) to the Vitra Design Museum (which is actually just outside the city and across the border in Weil am Rhein, Germany), there’s something for everyone.
Whether you’re keen to wow the little ones (or reconnect with your own inner child) at the charming Spielzeug Welten toy museum; be amused by the quirky collection of silly things at the Hoosesaggmuseum (Basel’s smallest and perhaps strangest museum); or be inspired by works by artists such as Picasso and Monet – this welcoming Swiss city’s cultural offerings aren’t merely a matter of quantity. Among Basel’s many museums, galleries and other cultural hotspots are some of the world’s most prized collections of art and some of the most compelling and celebrated exhibitions.
Here’s a quick look at six museums I came upon – and loved – during my recent visit. I’d love to go back for a visit to each of these again – and to see how many more of Basel’s 40 museums I could check out …
