American artist Dorothea Tanning, who died in 2012 at the age of 101, was a prodigious master of figurative art. Web of Dreams on show at Alison Jacques Gallery on Berners Street in Fitzrovia shares her raw talent and often playful approach in a delightful exhibition presented in close collaboration with The Dorothea Tanning Foundation.
I don’t see why one shouldn’t be absolutely fascinated with the human form, there are so many reasons to be. Besides, we are living in human bodies, we go through life in this world envelope. Web of Dreams is Alison Jacques Gallery’s second solo exhibition of works by Dorothea Tanning and brings together a selection of paintings and works on paper. The pieces on view span fifty years – from Tanning’s 1939 work on paper Tango to a work with the same title made in 1989 – with many having never been exhibited before and all demonstrating the artist’s lifelong study of the passionate interplay of figures.
The show is well worth stopping by the gallery to see.
