Man oh man, I love banh mi and the recent years proliferation of places stuffin’ full and thick across London is a delicious thing indeed – and one that just got tastier with the launch of Whaam Banh Mi.
Yep, another Vietnamese baguette sandwich joint – this one a mostly takeaway affair on Piccadilly Circus side of Soho. I dropped by for a midweek lunch (as long as the sun’s out the options for where to bite into your banh mi are splendid – I carved out a corner of grassy dappled sunlight in Golden Square) and pleased my palate greatly in doing so.
I loved the “Luc Lac” brisket sandwich (sliced beef braised in sesame oil and homemade marinade, £6.50) and am craving a repeat visit to try the BBQ shredded pork (seven-hour pork shoulder, slowly cooked in smoked spices and oyster sauce, £6). I arrived on the late side of lunch and was informed the pork often sells out quick.
By the way, Whaam does morning pastries and coffee too – sourced from Saigon Coffee Company and Black Sheep Coffee (so, robusta beans). I’d be keen to drop in for a “Bullet Proof” coffee (coconut milk mixed with espresso and served as a latte or capuccino, £4.50) or a taste of the more typical Vietnamese iced coffee (Vietnamese Robusta bean blended with evaporated milk and served with ice, £3.50).
Whaam Banh Mi is located at 40 Great Windmill Street, W1D 7LY. Find out more at whaambanhmi.com.
