Experience a Full Spectrum of Flavours at the Malaysian Home Cooking Supper Club

Home cooking. It’s a most wonderful thing when done with passion and pride. And if the proud and passionate cook’s original home happens to Malaysian, then those folks lucky enough to enjoy the flavoursome fare are in for an especially delicious treat. One such fortunate foodie was me last time round at Vi Vian Woo’s Malaysian Home Cooking supper club.

Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Vi brings to her table a chef’s background. She even co-owned her own Malaysian restaurant in Spain for five years with her husband (which she believes to have been the only Malaysian restaurant in the country at that time). Now living in London, she opens her home (a “characterful warehouse conversion” in central-ish east London) and occasionally other venues to the public for regular supper clubs featuring a range of dishes that celebrate the “gastronomic diversity” and “true fusion” of Malaysian cuisine.

During my supper, I loved every bite of the many courses presented. But my favourite dish was definitely the ten-hour slow cooked beef Rendang. That said, vegetarians and pescatarians should have no trouble finding ample and delicious options (as long as they notify Vi of dietary preference in advance). Vi’s jackfruit crumble with vanilla ice cream and pickled nutmeg for dessert was a very close runner up.

Her clubs welcome ten to 12 people at a time for a suggested donation of £30 each to “cover food costs and the effort.” Meals are served family style and guests are welcome to BYOB.

Here’s a look at Malaysian Home Cooking’s upcoming dates:

  • Friday 15 January (check to see if there’s still space for tonight!)
  • Friday 22 January
  • Friday 29 January
  • Friday 5 February

  1. The supperclub idea sounds really good. A great way to meet and make friends over good food.

Ten-hour slow cooked beef Rendang…??? Be still my heart!
