There’s nothing foul about the Fowl Mouths residency taking place now through the first week of March at Clapham’s rockin’ little indie pub, The King & Co. And without doubt a read of the Fowl Mouths’ menu jam packed with Japanese comfort food treats should ring mellifluent to any foodie within earshot.
South London supper club heroes, Fowl Mouths, have brought their signature dishes of ultra yummy Japanese grub to The King & Co for a five-week kitchen takeover. Highlights include terrific teriyaki chilli wings (£6) and killer kara-age chicken (£5 as a starter, £10 as a main served with wasabi coleslaw). Both are way too easy to keep eating and eating and eating, which is just what I gleefully did when I paid the pub a visit a couple of days back.
Despite the menu’s preponderance of poultry, there’s plenty of dishes to prevent vegetarians from running afoul. I loved the especially moreish tofu katsu curry (£8) and can highly recommend the giant-sized pumpkin korokke Scotch egg with tonkatsu sauce (£6.50) as well. There’s more (meat and non) items (all mains served with ample rice) to ensure just about any palate will be pleased.
Room for dessert? Inquire about the homemade ice cream or the oozerific hot chocolate sesame balls.
My visit was not only excuse to indulge in Nippon-inspired nosh but also to sample some great beer. The night was a tap takeover by Hammerton Brewery (coming down from its north of the river brewery in Islington). I enjoyed every sip of my pint of Islington Steam Lager (4.7% ABV), a fruity and fairly sweet unfiltered and unpasteurized lager made with San Francisco Lager yeast fermented at ale temperatures, while the brewery’s limited edition Baron H Earl Grey Black IPA (5.8% ABV), thoroughly intrigued and seemed to be ideal liquid match for sticky toffee pudding.
