I love Neapolitan style pizza. It’s one of my favourite foods and probably the one dish I could eat everyday for the longest time without getting tired of it. I reckon the pizzas coming from the wood-fired ovens of Rossopomodoro are among London’s finest. So when the invitation came my way to attend a press night preview of its new pizza masterclasses hosted by the restaurant group’s senior pizzaioli I was keen to attend.
The class, held at Rossopomodoro’s Chelsea location, turned out to be a lot of fun. After a long workday of sitting on my bum and staring at a screen, it was nice to use my hands to make something simple and yummy, socialise with some folks and enjoy a nice meal.
I’d tried my hand at making my own pizzas before with some success, but definitely feel I can do a better job based on the instruction and tips learned at Rossopomodoro.
Since the class, I’ve had a great time experimenting with the dough I brought home (enough to make four full sized 13” pizzas or even more mini-pizzas) at home. I’ve made all sorts of pizzas – such as a classic margherita; a vegan kale, garlic and sri racha pizza; a mini-pizza topped with hot wings; and a haggis, egg, and Cheddar breakfast creation. I’ve been pleased with my results too, though I must say my respect for the people who make pizzas at Rossopomodoro. The principle behind baking a pizza is as basic as anything, achieving that perfectly baked pizza is quite another and I imagine takes many hours to master.
Next classes open to the public will be held Thursday 25 February at Oxford Street and Thursday 31 March at Swiss Cottage. The price for those classes will be £30 per person (the usual price is £50). Guest will receive the following:
- Pizza making masterclass covering dough preparation, tips on home baking techniques and best ingredients to use;
- Enough dough to make up to four Neapolitan pizza that you will be able to bake at home once it is fully proofed;Rossopomodor’s pizza recipe; and
- A three-course meal including a starter, a pizza and a dessert.
£30 for a lesson, a meal and the main ingredient for four more at-home meals is good value. The class would be ideal for a casual date, team-building exercise; family night.
