A Foodie’s Guide to Yacht Chartering in the Caribbean

Caribbean food

One of the many great reasons to charter in the Caribbean is the unique flavours of the region. Food can shape our experience in the most profound way and should be a large part in any vacation worth its salt.

The Caribbean islands each offer dishes that are distinct to their region, and when chartering a yacht through the area, you have the perfect opportunity to try them out. With yacht ownership comes the freedom to decide where and when to go to each location, you’ll have an entirely different experience from anyone that stays in an all-inclusive hotel; so seize the opportunity to sample as many of these delicious dishes as possible!

Fungi

This dish is made with cornmeal, boiled into a thick soup together with okra. Not unlike the Italian polenta, it’s normally served as a compliment together with a portion of protein, normally fish. The dish is a staple of the British Virgin Islands but is also prevalent on Antigua.

Arrowroot cake

The natural starches of the arrowroot tuber became popular in the Victorian era, and is still used in many dishes today. One of these is the arrowroot cake popular on the Grenadines (St Vincent and Grenada). This zesty cake is a must-try, where most of the flour has been replaced by arrowroot.

Roasted breadfruit

This is another common dish found in the Grenadines, where it’s not only a locally grown fruit, but is a symbol of the islands that is often carved into pottery. Normally prepared in an open fire, the fruits are roasted and the flesh scooped out to be used as a compliment to fresh, fried fish.

Conch

If you go to the Bahamas, this large sea snail is a must at least once. As their national dish, it can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as marinated in lime (ceviche), fried (conch fritters), or in a delicious conch chowder.

Boudin Creole

Martinique is famous for having a large variety of styles and food types influencing their cooking. This delicacy is basically a French blood sausage infused with local spices. It may not be for everybody, but it should be tried at least once.

Drinks

There are also quite a few different drinks that are typical of the region, with rum being the most common. From the Grenadines-produced Sunset rum, to Mauby pop made of tree bark, the variants are many and will make your meal so much more delicious.
There are all kinds of additional dishes to try, of course, but the ones mentioned here simply have to be experienced. Yacht charter in the Caribbean and get a fantastic food experience that you will remember for the rest of your life!
