Borough Market traders, Gourmet Goat, just got a more gourmet and less goaty with the introduction of a new meat on the menu: rose veal.
High-welfare British rose veal is now on offer at Gourmet Goat, winners of “Best Street Food Trader or Takeaway” at the recent 2016 BBC Food & Farming Awards. As is the case with Gourmet Goat specialty, kid goat meat, the veal is sourced from ethical dairy farms to reduce food waste and curb at-birth culling of thousands of dairy bull calves that can’t be reared for milk production.
FYI (in case you don’t known): RSPCA approved rose veal refers to meat from calves not fed the restricted, low-iron diet as is the case with more common white veal meat. Thousands of dairy bull calves are killed at birth every year

Of course, notably noble intentions aside, rose veal is delicious. It’s a traditional part of the Eastern Mediterranean diet reflected in Gourmet Goat’s existing dishes too. During a recent Borough Market browse, I savoured every bite of my sample of Gourmet Goat’s veal.
Priced at £5 for a small salad box or £8 for a large salad or pitta wrap, the new offering is an affordable and filling indulgence. Nick, Nadia and their team roast their veal for five hours rubbed with a homemade baharat spice mixture (cumin, cloves, mastica, black pepper, cinnamon and chilli flakes). It’s then served with a gorgeous grape molasses alongside a smoky pepper sauce made with fermented Kurdish pepper flakes for super tender, extra juicy, and deeply flavoursome results.
