Pizza and cocktails – does it get much better? Yeah, probably but it’s still a winning combo for casual night out as I found when I stopped by the recently opened Ray’s Bar in Dalston.
The team behind Voodoo Ray’s and Dalston Superstore launched Ray’s Bar about a month ago. The basement bar sits beneath Voodoo Ray’s (but is entered from a separate door) and is hardly a minute’s saunter from Dalston Superstore.
It’s designed to be a late night destination. With the low of neon art, long bank of plush seating and ample floor space to sway, and DJ spinning vinyl from a cosy nook, Ray’s most certainly seems to be a suitable option for where to end up on your next night out. I was there a little earlier in the evening though. And for me, the venue fit the bill as a perfect place for a couple of school night drinks and a casual bite.
Food is supplied by Voodoo Ray’s kitchen with a short menu of 22” pizza pies. Gargantuan enough to guarantee leftovers for parties of up to three (at least), all pizzas are priced £26 each. For a super spicy and amply meaty pie, go for the Hot Mix 5 (thick cut pepperoni, jalapenos, red peppers, mozzarella, and tomato sauce). I loved it for my din-din that night and brekkie the next day. Of course, it’s easy doings just to head up to Voodoo Ray’s if you just want a slice or two.
As appreciated as the pizza was, the cocktails were the main draw during my visit. I especially liked Spice World (Rittenhouse Rye, chai, cream, and spices); the Tunnel Dancer (Lagavulin, Rittenhouse Rye, chilli and rhubarb Bitters); and The Rio Cross (Koko Kanu, pistachio, pineapple, coconut, and lime served in a pistachio rimmed glass). Those three drinks and most other are priced a reasonable £8.
