This past Friday night was falafel night here in tikichris land with a friendly gathering of folks at the weeks old Pilpel Aldgate.
The party was the latest of my 10X10 celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of my blog.
I’ve been a big fan of Pilpel and its do-one-thing-and-do-it-well approach to food since founder Uri Dinay opened his first falafel takeaway back in ’09 across from Old Spitalfields Market. So it was delicious pleasure to team up with him for this event.
Like his other Pilpel outlets, the newly launched Aldgate restaurant offers a concise menu featuring crispy on the outside/fluffy on the inside homemade falafel (based on Dinay’s grandfather’s recipe) with pitas and salads and an amazing spread of toppings at very reasonable prices. The Aldgate space is different though: it’s roomier with a good amount of seating. The dining concept has been tweaked as well. Rather than focus primarily on takeaway orders, the plan for Pilpel Aldgate is to stay open well into the evening to offer table service with sharing plate to be enjoyed with drinks for casual dining.
Our Friday night get together was the soft media launch for the restaurant. I was glad to share one of my favourite affordable and healthy London eateries with a select crew of London bloggers, influencers, and friends.
Pilpel is located at 60 Alie Street, E1 8PX (with four other locations in town). Find out more at pilpel.co.uk.
