A good steak in a smart place, that’s the gist of what’s on offer at new King’s Cross steakhouse, Bar + Block.
During my recent invited visit, I had a satisfying lunch and found the York Way restaurant (at the base of the Premier Inn hotel just up the street from King’s Cross Station) to be an ideal place for a broad range of reasons to get off your feet.
Met almost immediately with a bowl of popcorn flavoured with beef drippings, my lunch was off to a savoury start. My steak – a 10oz spiral cut fillet of “beef from British breeds of cattle reared across the Pampas in South America” (£25.50) – was a juicy treat, cooked to my specification and served with chips (meh), chimichurri (yum!) and a side salad with garlic prawns (£2.95 extra).
A 175ml glass of Andeluna 1300 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza, Argentina, £5.10) paired well, as I suspect most of the other reds in the largely New World wine list would have. More because I just had to see than I needed to eat it, a Churro Sundae dessert (churros coated in cinnamon sugar, served with vanilla ice cream, lemon curd, clotted cream, crunchy biscuit bites and meringue, £5.95) proved a fun way to end my meal.
Service was phenomenal – fast and friendly. My booth was cushy and spacious.
After my meal I pulled out my Macbook and stayed on to do a spot work over a double espresso (one bummer about the experience: coffee was Costa, so quality was just so-so).
If you’re in the King’s Cross area, hankering for a steak or some nibbles (plenty of veggie and non-steak options) – or simply a spot to relax or catch up on some work, Bar + Block is a wise choice.
Bar + Block is located at 26-30 York Way, N1 9AA (with locations in Birmingham and Whitely). Find out more at barandblock.co.uk.
