Basque Chef Eneko Atxa’s eponymous One Aldwych restaurant launched a new brunch menu over the weekend. I was glad to have a first taste on Saturday.
It wasn’t all that long ago when I raved about my early January dinner at Eneko, but I nevertheless made haste when invited to return to try of its new weekend brunch menu. Everything about the new menu was as super yummy and elegant as I had remembered, just more brunch-y.
I’m still mmm-ing over my starter course of suckling pig brioche, (slow-cooked pork shoulder in a doughnut-y brioche, £9). A main course of black pudding with leeks and onion, served with piquillo peppers and crispy corn talo (£12) satisfied as well (talo is like a mexican tortilla made with corn paste and water).
Kemey (who absolutely loved our initial visit to Eneko) joined me for the brunch and was equally enthused by her choice of dishes. A bite of her talo with heritage tomatoes and fresh herbs starter (£10) confirmed she was right to be pleased. Ditto regarding her main: grilled yellowfin tuna with salad and haystack potatoes (£24).
A potent Patxarini cocktail of Basque sloe liqueur, patxaran, with coconut rum and coffee (£10) was especially tasty rocket fuel, A bottle of house red paired well with all dishes. For dessert, salted caramel mousse with sheep’s milk ice cream and cookie crumble (£7) was a winner.
