Sweden’s third biggest city, Malmö, aims to draw food lovers from near and far with a new series of foodie videos.
The series is presented by the city of Malmö to celebrate and honour its burgeoning dining scene with a look at some of its preferred places to eat.
Here’s the first in the series, a delicious little clip about Saltimporten Canteen.
Set in a former salt warehouse in Malmö’s Hullkajen harbor area of town, Saltimporten Canteen was launnced in 2012 by local foodie heroes Ola Rudin and Sebastian Persson (of Malmö’s Trio restaurant acclaim) with a focus on back-to-basic, high quality ingredient lunches. The throngs of fans soon followed.
Dishes – such as lamb and broccoli stew or braised beef with wild mushrooms – are simple by design with minimal ingredients. Prices are more than reasonable with a generous portions going for around 10 quid (practically a steal for a good meal in Malmö). Whet your appetite? Word to the wise is to get to Saltimporten early to avoid the (albeit friendly) queues and the early closing hours.
Other eateries highlighted in the video series include Swedish food truck champs Nordic Street Food, and the welcoming and well respected chef-y haven Kv. Åkern.
An ancient town of cobblestones with a thriving contemporary lifestyle (not to mention a buzzing environment for startups), Malmö is an ideal destination for frisky and fashionable city breaks. Only about 10 miles or so from Copenhagen across the famous Øresund Bridge and maybe three hours drive from Gothenburg, it’s a smart stop on any Scandi itinerary.
