The Table Café, Southwark Street

P1050748

A casual air and a commitment to seasonal and sustainable food made my meal at The Table Café a pleasant night out.

Word is weekend brunch is the preferred time to visit Table, but I was pleased with my Friday evening dinner. I very much enjoyed my grilled buttermilk chicken burger (free-range chicken breast with tomato, Scotch bonnet pepper sauce, sour cream and avocado sauce, £14) served with properly crispy chips. A dark chocolate and sea salt mousse (£5) was one of the tastier indulgences I’ve devoured of late. And I liked the emphasis on responsibly produced and largely British fare – a lot – and how that emphasis extended to the drinks.

I loved and was rather intrigued by my Sussex distilled Blackdown Silver Birch Vermouth Blanco (£5.50) and found my glass of Oregon Pinot Noir from Johan Vineyards Farmlands (£8 for a glass, £42 for a bottle) went great with my chicken. It was a more than acceptable for sipping on its own as well.

Service was super receptive, helpful and friendly. There’s a large outdoor dining area, which turned out to be an ideal setting for relaxing on a summer’s night. Near Tate Modern and the South Bank but a few street in from the river, it’s a smart place to keep in mind next time you want to play tourist but not subject yourself to large crowds of out-of-towners consuming mediocre food and drink at one of the too many touristy joints in the area.

The Table Café is located at 83 Southwark Street, SE1 0HX. Find out more at thetablecafe.com.
