Earlier this week I joined a small group of media folk for a tour of the Greenall distillery in Warrington. Coinciding with the launch of the new bottle and label of Greenall’s London Dry Gin, the visit was the first time non-employee and non-trade guests had been allowed inside.
While there I made sure to stash a bottle in my bag to share with one lucky reader. Fancy a taste of what Britain’s oldest distillers have been during since the 1761? Keep reading.
If you’re not familiar with Greenall’s, it’s a classic London Dry Gin, and a top choice for ginning up a G&T or as the base for a broad range of cocktails. If you’re into gins then you’re probably well aware of Greenall’s though; not only is it produced by the UK’s longest running distillery in operation, but it’s the second best selling brand on the market. The bottle might have gotten a reboot recently along with a spruced up (and attractively vibrant) label, but the clean bright flavour remains the same.
Making sure the Greenall’s of today tastes as crisp as it did 256 years ago is Master Distiller, Joanne Moore. Jo’s worked at the distillery since 1996 and has been the Master Distiller since ’06. Greenall’s key botanicals are juniper, angelica, and coriander – what Jo calls the “holy trinity” of gin – with a strong touch of lemon.
As for the distillery, operations moved a few years back after a fire destroyed the original site. But the brand stayed in Warrington, and the same two original copper stills as always were saved and continue to be used. The new digs are spiffy too – state of the art stuff.
From what I could tell it was business as usual at the distillery. That is until it came to lunch when part of the distillery had been transformed into a dining space with Michelin starred chef Aiden Byrne (of Collingwood and Manchester House) at the helm creating a lunch to complement Greenall’s refreshing flavour profile. If you just think of gin as something to have before or after a meal, think again! Highlights of our feast included maybe the yummiest duck breast I’ve yet to taste with an equally delicious licorice sauce and it paired perfectly with Greenall’s!
