Alexandra Kalinowski heads to Haggerston for Pop-up India at Proud East.
Get ready to take a tour of the world, by staying put in East London. Proud East, the gorgeous venue along the canal in Haggerston, has just launched Pop-up India, freshly painted and redecorated after a fun run of Pop-up Japan. With a colourful makeover of floating flowers, a tuk-tuk photo booth, garlands and art, Proud East has made itself a hot destination for those looking to soak up a bit of Indian culture this summer.
The pop-up, which runs until 24th September, will feature a variety of activities including Bollywood dance classes, henna workshops and the art of yoga. Along with a fully stocked bar of Eastern-inspired cocktails and Kingfisher beer, cuisine from some of London’s best chefs will tide you over as you easily spend hours bopping your head to the DJ and taking in the art. In the evenings The Nomad Cinema will feature famous films you can watch beneath the stars.
It’s the perfect setting for an intimate night out or with a larger group of friends as there’s a little something for everyone. When we arrived the place was buzzing with people munching on chaat, pani puri, curry and okra fries. Through bites of Bombay bhel I had henna quickly painted on my hand as I watched Bollywood dancers perform around my table. On weekends the brunch menu just may have you parting with your beloved Dishoom for a while. But I guess you’ll just have to see for yourself…
Pop-up India will run from 6th July until 24th September at Proud East 2-10 Hertford Road, N1 5ET. You can find out more at proudeast.com/popupindia.
