One of the more delectable moments of my visit to Friuli Veneza Giulia (not to mention one of the best meals I’ve had this year) was my lunch at Trattoria da Ivana & Secondo.
During my midday, midweek, mid June visit, this rustic tavern with an upscale but easygoing air was packed (or at least all the outdoor seating) – and with good reason.
Set on the side of a winding mountain road with terraced outdoor seating to take advantage of the breathtaking views over the Tagliamento Valley and the chalky white banks of the Tagliamento River, Ivana & Secondo is a lovely place for any dining occasion from informal to hallmark.
As stunning as the vistas were, I had trouble looking up from the beauteous spread on the table. Food was cooked with regional inspiration and plated with refined consideration. Ricotta gnocchi with chicken and olives was an ideal starter course. Duck breast with potatoes and strawberries was a rich main with a broad range of complementary flavours.
Wines (mostly local or from northern Italy), espresso and a grappa “rinse” at the end of the meal were all thoroughly enjoyable. But my favourite drink of the meal was what co-owner Secondo presented as “a special surprise” to go with dessert: a super boozy mirtillo liqueur as digestive served in a shot glass filled with myrtle berries.
Service was swift and personable throughout my seating.
Trattoria da Ivana & Secondo is located at Via Manazzons, 62, 33094 Pinzano al Tagliamento. Find out more at trattoriaivanaesecondo.com.
