Deep South BBQ and more in far South London? Miss P’s in Croydon brings it.
The folks at Hellmann’s (yes, the “bring out the best” mayonnaise brand – a staple in my kitchen for decades) were in touch recently to see if I’d like to head down to East Croydon to try some chicken wings.
The wings in question were the smoked fried chicken wings at Miss P’s. Seasoned with the restaurant’s own pitmaster’s signature rub then smoked and later fried in beer batter – they had a smoky flavour with a crispy crunch that paired nicely with some housemade Alabama white sauce (that’s were the Hellmann’s angle comes in – Miss P’s uses the mayo in its recipe).
The Hellmann’s peeps said the wings were a limited run item available only until 29 September and price at a generous £4.50. But from what I gathered at P’s, the wings are to be a permanent fixture and will cost an extra 50p for the pleasure of eating them. But I’d double check all that if I were you.
Whatever the case, biting into was a pleasure indeed but just the start of the downhome yumminess!
While there I had a sample of chopped pork belly dressed with a Carolina style sauce (a full order’ll cost ya £8).
Miss P bills her BBQ as “Atlanta style.” As a Georgia boy myself I have to say that I’m not sure there’s anything specifically Atlantan (or North Georgian for that matter) about the food (especially considering the wood used for smoking seems to be exclusively oak, not hickory; and the house cut of pork is belly, not shoulders or hams). Nevertheless, I sincerely doubt any bona fide BBQ lover from ATL or anywhere else in the South would find fault with it. It tasted so good and had a tender texture. I could have eaten a lot more.
But what did put me in an exceptionally Southern state of mind was Miss P’s Cajun Catfish Sandwich (£6). I loved it. A boneless catfish fillet coated with a cajun rub, fried to order and served with slaw, cajun mayo and pickles on the side – it was a moreish melt-in-your-mouth treat and the only such slice of true American I’ve come across during my many years living in London. Thank you!
Kudos continue for the quick and friendly service and for the valiant effort on the New Orleans Milk Punch (£8).
Prices were super nice for the quality and quantity offered.
