Arms Around the Child is to host an art exhibition and auction to raise funds to build a home for HIV+ orphans in Jaipur, India.
Arms Around the Child is a UK-based children’s charity working with projects in Ghana, South Africa and India. I’ve recently been made aware of the tremendous good deeds it does helping provide vulnerable children with safe places to live and access to education.
This November, the charity will host Home is Where the Heart is, an art exhibition and auction featuring a wealth of pieces donated by a veritable who’s who list of world renowned artists.
The exhibition will run from 9 to 16 November with opening hours of 9am to 5pm at Fiat Chrysler Motor Village Marylebone.
Curated by Lee Sharrock in association with Monica Colussi, Home is Where the Heart is includes artwork by Sir Peter Blake, The House of Fairy Tales, Gavin Turk, David Byrne, Pure Evil, Hassan Haijai and many (many) more artists. I’m keen to give this show a thorough looksee and really excited to check out Haijai’s contribution. His currently running La Caravane exhibition at Somerset House was one of the coolest exhibitions I’ve come across in quite a while).
A number of the participating artists have created new pieces especially for the show or have donated works that fit perfectly with its Home is Where the Heart is theme. For example, Alastair Mackie’s Untitled (Heart) is a sculpture created from a wasp nest modified into the shape of a heart. Mackie re-pulped a single wasp nest and cast it into a mould taken from an anatomical model of a human heart. The piece to be auctioned is the only remaining artist’s proof. Other editions are in the in the collections of Damien Hirst and David Roberts as well as in the Wellcome Collection.
The auction itself will be held on the evening of Thursday the 16th from 7pm at the Motor Village with former Christie’s International Director of Auctioneering Hugh Edmeades chairing it. During the live and silent auction drinks will be provided compliments of Bering Ice Vodka, McGuigan Wines and Pistonhead.
Fiat Chrysler Motor Village Marylebone is located at 105 Wigmore Street, W1U 1QY. For more about the exhibition and auction go to armsaroundthechild.org/art-around-child-art-auction.
