Cognac: Spirit of Place | Restaurants

P1070413

Cognac isn’t just a great place for drink. The town has some amazing restaurants as well.

Here’s a list of restaurants where I ate exceptionally well during my visit.

Le Chai
42 Allée de la Corderie

This charming little rustic restaurant serves big flavoured food with subdued aplomb. Clams with parsley butter for my starter followed by a veal rib marinated in homemade ketchup was a memorable lunch and one I’d be included to repeat upon any subsequent visits to Cognac.

Coq D’Or
33 Place François 1er

This popular brasserie in the heart of town is an ideal setting for enjoying classic French dishes such as foie gras and duck confit (my choices during my dinner there). The wine list is superb as are the cocktails. I had my first Cognac Summit (a super refreshing mix of VSOP, lime, ginger, lemonade and cucumber) and loved it.

Poulpette
46 Avenue de Lattre de Tassigny

Inventive, seasonal dishes at this tiny open-kitchen eatery added up to one of the most inspired and delicious meals I’ve had this year. In particular, duck tartare with pecans and anchovies rocked my palate in a majorly scrumptious way. Wow.

L’Yeuse
65 Rue de Bellevue

Upscale dining with a stunning views of the Charente Valley is the hallmark at this boutique hotel’s terraced restaurant with “Cognathèque” library featuring 180 Cognacs from 60 different houses. Trout tartare, duck confit, fabulous cheeses, great local wines all made my meal at Yeuse an delightfully elegant experience.
