Jasmine Kaur journeys to London’s South Pole (Brixton) for an evening of rooftop revelry and festive season feels.
I was invited to the launch of Brixton Rooftop’s South Pole Saloon to get a taste of the wintery festivities and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The combination of glitter – courtesy of Glitter Tits London – and the incredible live band created a true festival feel that you can never normally experience in December. An ice king and queen parading around the rooftop and glamorous Santas added to festive feel.
You might expect a rooftop bar to be fairly limiting in what can be achieved – you make an assumption that it won’t be comfortable because of the weather, but the first thing I noticed was how the rooftop covering easily tricks you into believing you’re outside – the dark fabric keeps out the winter chill. And the venue is deceptively large. Once you walk past the picnic benches, the Christmas tree and the stalls selling delicious street food – I can recommend the deep-fried mac n’ cheese balls but there’s everything from fried wings to beef brisket on the menu – you find yourself in a small Nordic-styled winter land with cabin after cabin filled with assorted goodies. There’s even a dedicated selfie cabin.
There’s plenty of seating so you won’t find yourself standing awkwardly, and the best part? There are three bars offering a range of drinks such as wine, espresso martinis, and cocktails. So you won’t have to spend half an hour queueing for a drink.
South Pole Saloon is located at Brixton Rooftop, Pope’s End, SW9 8JH. Find out more at brixtonrooftop.com.
