Okay! Okay! I did eventually manage to leave the hotel and have a look around Ljubljana. And what a luscious (and scrumptious) look it was!
Exquisite food and magnificent views were experienced in full force at Strelec Restaurant, where my lunch turned out to be one of the best meals I had in 2017.
Set inside the top of the archer’s tower of Ljubljana Castle, Strelec is situated on Ljubljana’s highest hill and can be reached by car, short (but very) uphill hike or funicular. The castle itself ranks as the city’s most popular attraction and its most iconic landmark. So plans to eat there were coupled with doubts about how good the food might be verses how much the kitchen might rely on location and novelty to please patrons.
I’m pleased to report that despite the restaurant’s stunning 360° views, Chef Igor Jagodic aim is to delight his guests with wonderful culinary creations more than picturesque panoramas. With beautifully presented dishes such as foie gras ice cream; cuttlefish ink pasta stuffed with cuttlefish and pork; and aged back rib of beef with baked carrots, puree of carrots, roasted garlic and bone marrow, pickled radish and bone marrow sauce – I hardly looked up from the table at all during my lunch. An end of meal treat comprised of chocolate covered beetroot marshmallows with chocolate and fennel potato crisps was as beguiling as it was irresistible.
Wines were amazing (and local). Service was cordial and prompt.
