Sherry Christmas

DSC_4663

Tis the season for a tipple. I reckon sherries are among the most suitable and satisfying drinks for yearend festivities and winter recollections.

Contrary to the typical Christmastime connoisseur, however, dry sherries generally enthuse me more than sweet ones (that’s not to say I’m put off at all by sweet sherries). So I thought before I commence my own Yuletide celebrations and pour myself a wee glass of cheer, I would single out three dry sherries that offer optimum drinking at this time of year.

Each is Gonzalez Byass, one of Spain’s best known sherry bogedas dating back five generations with deep connections to Jerez, and represents not only excellent value for money but extraordinary value for flavour.

Apostoles 30-Year-Old Palo Cortado VORS

Aged for an average of 30 years in barrel, this Palo Cortado is blended with a small amount of sweet and raisin-y Pedro Ximenez, giving it a dried fruit character and smoothing what might otherwise be a dry edge. It’s a good one to consider pairing with pates and charcuterie, games, and nuts.

20% ABV
RRP £19.99 (37.5cl) at Ocado, Waitrose Cellar, Majestic online

Del Duque 30-Year-Old Amontillado VORS

A supremely complex palate and a rich walnut character, Del Duque is an Amontillado aged for an average of 30 years. Maybe not to everyone’s tastes, I find it one of the most delicious and intriguing drinks out there – full stop. Sip on its own or enjoy with mature cheeses and umami rich dishes.

21.5% ABV
RRP £19.99 (37.5cl) at Ocado, Oddbins, Whisky Exchange

Tio Pepe Fino

The world’s most popular and well received fino is a good all rounder to have on hand anytime of year. Palate cleansing with a touch of minerality, Tio Pepe is brilliant at the start of a meal or in between courses. It’s a winner paired with fish dishes too!

15% ABV
RRP £10 (75cl), widely available
