Chez Maiss Restaurant and Wine Bar, Hammersmith

Chez Maiss, Hammersmith

Newly opened Chez Maiss inside the Broadway Shopping Centre at Hammersmith Station was everything I had hoped to encounter when reviewing a restaurant. It’s a hidden gem in plain sight offering delicious food and drink in a convenient location.

Set inside Broadway Shopping Centre near the Tesco Metro and The Craft Beer Co with an entrance from the street is family owned restaurant and wine bar, Chez Maiss. Owners Maiss and Rebal moved to London from Syria.

Though the kitchen offers a globally-inspired menu, I found the dishes that reflected Maiss and Rebal’s Middle Eastern Mediterranean background appealed most. I loved the “Turkish style” pizza (Feta, minced beef, and sumac onions, £9) as a starter. Lemon chicken marinated with sumac onions (£14.50) was an especially scrumptious ‘real deal’ main. That said, crisp-fried Monte Enebro cheese with mushroom aioli and honey (£9) was a winner as well, and a chocolate and avocado mousse for dessert rocked too. Portions were generous and dishes were served promptly.

As for drinks, an intriguing Old Popcorn Fashion cocktail (Hennessy Fine de Cognac, Bulliet Rye, popcorn syrup, honey water, and chocolate bitters, £8.50) set a tasty and potent tone at the onset of my visit. A glass of organic Grüner Veltliner Röschitz Dac 2018 paired exceptionally well with my Monte Enebro (and stood its own with my pizza). A glass of Fess Parker Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2016 did a bang up job with my chicken and cast any possible aspersions that this quaint establishment couldn’t cut it as a quality watering hole.

Hammersmith folk and commuters: you’ve got a great wine bar on your doorstep! Give it your full support.

Service was friendly and helpful. Setting was cosy and comfortable.

I fully intend to go back.

Chez Maiss is located at, Unit 21a-22b Broadway Shopping Centre West, W6 9YD. Find out more at chezmaiss.co.uk.
