Demi Perera reports on a pop-up for a good cause at Shangri-La Hotel.
Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel (2019) destination Sri Lanka suffered a devastating terrorist attack in April this year. 258 people were killed and over 500 injured. The island which depends on its tourism industry was dealt a further blow when over 34 countries issued travel warnings following the incident. However, Sri Lanka has begun its recovery. Many countries have lowered the threat level and it’s widely expected that the bans will be lifted entirely in time for the high season in December.
To assist the island on its journey Shangri-La Hotel At The Shard, London has collaborated with renowned Sri Lankan restaurant Ministry of Crab to host a pop-up seafood event. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to those affected.
The event will be held in Shangri-La At The Shard’s Sky Lounge on level 34 on 5th and 6th of July to coincide with the ICC Cricket World Cup. As cricket is Sri Lanka’s national sport, and the country celebrated a victory in their last game, live matches will be screened during the event.
The menu (£85 per person) includes two appetisers of light avocado and crab salad and Sri Lankan baked crab. The main course will be Ministry of Crab’s Dharshan Munidasa’s signature Garlic Chilli Crab. A second dish of Pepper Crab seasoned with hand-crushed black pepper, red pepper corns and pepper stock will follow. Pandan leaf rice pudding with a light mango sorbet for dessert already has us excited. Tiger and Tsingtao beer as well as selection of signature cocktails created by Shangri-La Hotel will also be available as extras.
The Sky Lounge is renowned for its breathtaking views across the capital. London’s skyline of old and new will mesmerise you from this height as you dine. Combine this with the hotel’s luxury service, responsibly-sourced Sri Lankan food and the great cause you’ll be supporting and the experience will have you enthralled.
There will be six sittings in total on Friday 5th July and Saturday 6th July. On 5th July the first will be at 6pm and the second at 8pm. On 6th July there will be two lunch sittings at 12pm and 2pm. Dinner will be at 6pm and 8pm respectively. You can reserve a table for any of these options by emailing SpecialEvents.SLLN@shangri-la.com or by calling 0207 234 8067.
