SlowBurn: Sustainable, Flavour-Forward and Veggie-Centric Takeaway in Walthamstow!

Listen up Walthamstow! SlowBurn is a new local takeaway kitchen centred on sustainably crafted dishes full of intriguing flavour.

Founder and Head Chef Chavdar Todorov brings knowhow and enthusiasm to his new enterprise to offer an at-home dining menu of mostly slow-cooked and largely plant-based dishes (with the option of “meat on the side”).

Recently, I had a chance to taste a range of Todorov’s creations. Every last bite was a treat full of intriguing flavour.

Among the most moreish items from the SlowBurn menu were the following highlights, all of which I crave to devour again:

  • Cashew “ricotta” sand carrots roasted sand carrots, harissa flavoured cashew ‘ricotta’, carrot tops pesto, toasted coriander seeds, £5.50;
  • Hispi cabbage seared in shallot oil, quickly baked and served with peanut, lime leaf and pink peppercorn satay sauce, £8.60;
  • Sautéed Brussel sprouts with fresh chestnuts finished in an umami dressing enriched with nutritional yeast, £4;
  • Bag of crackling (dehydrated, fried and seasoned with SlowBurn house rub), £3.50;
  • Smoked chicken croquettes with chilli jam, £5.50;
  • Featherblade of Belted Galloway beef (bred and raised by Garry Scholfield in Buckden, Upper Wharfedale, Yorkshire) rubbed with Maldon salt and cracked black pepper, smoked for 10 to 12 hours with a mix of hickory and red oak, and served with white onion puree and wilted cabbage leaves, £16.

Wow for each of these dishes with a double wow for the carrots and the crackling and maybe a third hooray for those croquettes!

Considering portion size and quality of ingredients (not to mention the commitment to sustainable sourcing and packaging), prices are more than reasonable – and in line with other decent takeaway options in this corner of East London.

If day-to-day under Covid-19 has you simmering in your home keen for new inspiration, or fuming for something different and delicious to try (and you live in Walthamstow) you are in luck. My SlowBurn meal reignited my taste buds in a way I haven’t experience sense before the first lockdown. I found some of Chef Todorov’s approach to cooking to be along the same lines of how I like to cook and eat – all be it with much more finesse, sophistication and skill of execution.

SlowBurn delivers Wednesday to Sunday only to E17 addresses at the moment. Orders can be picked up at 114b Blackhorse Lane, E17 6AA.
