My new year’s resolution for 2023 is to start blogging regularly again.
It’s been more than three years since I stopped writing as my main source of income, and I’m starting to realise the impact it’s had on me.
For roughly 15 years, writing and publishing online content was a significant part of my life. Being a blogger and freelance journalist who wrote primarily about food, drink, and travel shaped my identity and defined my character. While I don’t miss the associated lifestyle or the adventures and experiences I wrote about, I do miss the act of writing itself. I feel like I’m losing my voice and my writing skills. This is a terrible feeling.
When writing was a key part of my daily life, the process of organising my thoughts and ideas into cohesive written work helped me make sense of the world. It allowed me to develop my own distinct perspective and express it with confidence. However, over the past few years, life has been duller and more routine than I would have preferred. My sense of the world seems to be fading and I’m engaging with it less confidently.
By getting back into the habit of blogging regularly and carving out time to write, I hope to sharpen my writing skills and regain my perspective and confidence. I’ll try to set achievable goals, such as publishing a short post once a week, and stick to this schedule. The act of writing, rather than the specific topics I choose to write about, is what’s important to me. While I’m sure coming up with topics won’t be an issue, I’ll try not to worry too much about whether I have anything of value to write about. My main goal is to get back into the habit of writing regularly and sharing it with the world.
Writing was a significant part of my life. I miss the act of writing, as well as the sense of perspective and confidence it brings me. I hope that by setting achievable goals and sticking to a consistent schedule, I will be able to regain my skills and insight. While I am not necessarily concerned with the topics I choose to write about, my main goal is to get back into the habit of writing regularly and sharing it with the world.
