The Best of Marylebone Dining (CheapOair)

The Best of Marylebone Dining
CheapOair, January 12, 2012

DSC_8021

To compile a list of the best restaurants in the central and chic London neighbourhood of Marylebone is to come up with a list of at least some of the best places to eat in all of the UK, if not the whole of Europe. Anyone familiar with this part of town knows that such a list that is in any way succinct will inevitably omit some deliciously noteworthy places. But here’s an attempt to list a few Marylebone gems nonetheless with an emphasis placed on quality, service and Marylebone’s overall variety of fantastic dining options.

Sing a Priceless Duet on TV During the BRITS

mastercardbritawardslogo

To celebrate its 14 year partnership with the annual BRIT Awards, MasterCard has announced the launch of an exclusive Priceless Duets competition. Offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually perform a song with one of your favourite recording artists … and then have it aired on TV during the BRITs … this comp is truly “something for the fans.”

Something For The Fans builds on previous MasterCard campaigns, including last year’s campaign which saw fans win priceless memorabilia from BRIT Award- winning artists like Tinie Tempah and Kasabian, and gives cardholders across the country the chance to work with current leading chart acts, such as Emeli Sandé, JLS and Labrinth. To be eligible to win, you need to pay a visit to the competition’s dedicated website www.somethingforthefans.co.uk and upload an audition video. Checking out the site could also put you in the running to win one of hundreds of pairs of tickets to the BRIT Awards 2012.

The winning Priceless Duet will feature in the ad breaks of the BRIT Awards with MasterCard ceremony, which will be broadcast on ITV1 on 21 February 2012. Large scale proximity advertising will also be on display on the night of the Awards itself around The O2 Arena.

Not feeling like much of a Diva or getting cold feet at the thought of sharing the stage with some of this year’s hottest stars? There’s still a chance to get in on the act. In September 2011, MasterCard also unveiled Priceless London, dedicated to bringing consumers closer to their passions. By registering at www.pricelesslondon.co.uk, MasterCard cardholders can enjoy exclusive experiences and privileged access to the very best of London’s museums, theatres, music, restaurants, retail and attractions.

Virgin Money Launches with World’s First 270˚ Projection

Last night (January 10th) Richard Branson launched Virgin Money in a style befitting the audacious billionaire and his cross-industry Virgin brand with a first of its kind outdoor visual presentation in Central London. At 5.15pm, the world’s first 270˚ projection was introduced by Branson and screened upon the entire outside walls of Senate House.

DSC_1728

The fully immersive 3D projection, created by BMB neon, presented a stunning visual history of the Virgin brand. Said Trevor Beattie, cofounder of BMB: “It’s not every day you help launch a high street bank. And this being Virgin, we wanted to do it in as spectacular and memorable a fashion as possible.” The launch was definitely a treat to see. Time will tell if Virgin’s move to banking will be as spectacular and memorable.

To “make banking better” Branson reckons the industry needs some shaking up. At the end of last year, Virgin bought Northern Rock with the plan of turning its 75 branches into Virgin Money branches in 2012. Virgin’s reputation alone should certainly have all the other high street banks taking notice. And if Virgin Money can meet its aim to offer a “wide range of great value financial products that are easy to understand and sort out” and “give customer a better deal” then Virgin Money should prove as successful as other Virgin endeavours.

Tower Bridge in London (CheapOair)

Tower Bridge in London
CheapOair, January 10, 2012

Despite its prominent two towers, Tower Bridge derives its name from its proximity to the Tower of London.  It was completed, after eight years of construction, in 1894 and was considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats of its day.  More than 400 round-the-clock labourers participated in its construction which was overseen by five major contractors.

Ten of London’s Oldest Pubs (OneTravel)

LDP 2011.03.26 - Lion

A number of pubs in London lay claim to being the oldest in town. Still, the jury’s still out on exactly which one is the absolute oldest. So here’s a handful of pubs with some of the strongest arguments for being the oldest (or at least among the oldest pubs) in London. Whether or not one of these fine drinking establishments actually is the indisputable longest-standing pub in London, one thing’s for sure – they’re all great and historic places for having a pint.

Anchor (34 Park Street, Bank End, SE1 9EF): A favourite with the tourists (but the locals don’t seem to mind), this riverside pub with plenty of outdoor seating and views of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge is seemingly situated by design between Borough Market and Tate Modern. It’s also really close to Shakespeare’s Globe. Word around the pub is that the bard himself enjoyed more than a few drinks here at the Anchor. In 1666, the year Shakespeare died, another famed Londoner, Samuel Pepys, is said to have watched the Great Fire of London from this very pub, which was already around 100 years old.

Cittie of Yorke (22 High Holborn, WC1V 6BN): Not only among London’s oldest pubs, this Samuel Smith pub is also home to the longest bar in the whole of Britain. People have been drinking beer at this same site since the 1400. Although renovated in the 20th century, the cavernous pub still retains much of its evocative and ancient charm, including it’s massive centrepiece triangular fireplace with three faces and an underground flue.

George Inn (77 Borough High Street, SE1 1NH): The last remaining galleried coaching inn in London, the George Inn is owned by the National Trust and dates back to at least 1542. London Bridge, The Thames Path National Trail, Borough Market and plenty more local attractions make this a great place for a historic pit stop.

Prospect of Whitby (57 Wapping Wall, E1W 3SH): Believed to be London’s oldest riverside pub and dating back to 1520, the Prospect of Whitby was a popular haunt of smugglers back in the 16th century. Samuel Pepys and Charles Dickens are listed as some of the pub’s more reputable guests. These days, it’s a great place to drink real ales with locals and tourists alike lining up along the refurbished pewter covered bar.

Red Lion (23 Crown Passage at King Street, SW1Y 6PP): There are a lot of pubs with this same name here in England. In fact, it’s the most popular pub name in the country. More than 300 years old, the publican claims to hold the second longest beer license in London. And this one may very well be the first to have been called The Red Lion. Visitors and local beer lovers have been gathering at this same site since 1434.

Seven Stars (53-54 Carey Street, WC2A 2JB): There are a lot of reasons to love this pub: a resident cat, a friendly staff, and truly great food and drink are but a few. Located behind the Royal Courts of Justice, Seven Stars has been a preferred watering hole for those in the legal profession and simply those with high pub standards for slightly more than 400 years.

Spaniards Inn (Spaniards Road, NW3 7JJ): Was it a tollgate? Or maybe home to a Spanish ambassador? Is it actually haunted? Whatever the case, the Spaniards Inn has been around long enough to garner plenty of great stories about it. Dating from 1585 and located on the beautiful Hampstead Heath, Keats, Shelly and Byron all liked it here. Rumour also suggests infamous highwayman Dick Turpin spotted his prey from the Spaniards. Already legendary by Victorian Times, Dickens gave the pub a mention in The Pickwick Papers.

White Hart (191 Drury Lane, WC2B 5QD): With one of the strongest claims to being London’s oldest pub, but an interior that suggests it’s hardly more than a decade or so old, the White Hart has the oldest continuous license in London, which dates back to 1480. In addition, it boasts a super convenient location and a great vibe.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (145 Fleet Street, EC4A 2BU): Rebuilt just after the Great Fire of 1666 with a pub at this very location since at least 1538, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is a great one. Voltaire, Mark Twain, Samuel Johnson and all sorts of other folk have ambled in and out of this fabled establishment. It’s definitely worth a visit.

Ye Olde Mitre (1 Ely Court, Between Hatton Garden and Ely Place, EC1N 6SJ): While it’s not the easiest pub to find, efforts are rewarded by a friendly staff and great ambiance in this pub dating back to the 1540s. Although refurbished in the late 1700s, it still retains the qualities of a pub much, much older.

2012 Resolutions

IMGP7841

Yeah so I’m taking my own sweet time gradually getting around to making my new year’s resolutions for 2012. Bear with me please. I’m still a bit jet lagged after three weeks in the States and playing as capable a game of catch up as I can with my London workload and home life. Besides, publishing this post more than a week into 2012 is sort of in accord with one of my goals for the year: be more patient and focus on what’s at hand. I can be a hot head sometimes, rush when I don’t really have to and basically fumble through the ‘now’ in anticipation of the future.

How to go about this? Deep breaths, less time piddling with gadgets, simply acknowledging that I want to be a more patient person … I’m still working out the strategies (and certainly welcome any suggestions). I reckon if I achieve even a smidgen of success I’ll see the reward in myriad ways: better writing, better photography, better grip on my finances, more time with the people who mean the most to me, deeper appreciation of experiences …

Another resolution for this year is simply to keep up the good work from past resolutions which I feel I’ve more or less accomplished over the past few years. In particular, I’d like to continue being a non-smoker. Stopping smoking cigarettes was a big one for me last year. It took almost the whole year to quit, along with a lot of help and kindness from my girlfriend, but I did it!

See my 2009, 2010 and 2011 resolutions.

Do you have any resolutions for 2012? Got tips on how to keep ’em? How’d you do with any you might have set for yourself last year?

Happy new year!
Chris

The Golden Boy of Pye Corner

Golden Boy of Pye Corner

The Golden Boy of Pye Corner is a gold, life-size statue of a small boy. The effigy is located in the central London area known as the “City of London” between St Paul’s Cathedral and Smithfield Market. With the must-see and majestic Cathedral, the glitzy One New Change shopping centre, the pedestrian only Millennium Bridge across the Thames with Tate Modern on the other side … along with some of London’s oldest pubs and most highly regarded restaurants in high concentration – there are plenty of great reasons to visit the City of London, and a quick detour to pass by the Golden Boy adds a bit of centuries’ old context to this historic part of town.

For a firsthand look at how London‘s wealthiest prefer to shop and to take a gander at what products the Royal Family deems appropriate for their purchases, head over to Bond Street. This Central London street has been a famous and fashionable shopping district since the 1800s.  Despite its elite standing, Bond Street is easy enough to access. Indeed, it has its own Bond Street Tube Station (on the Central and Jubilee lines) at the corner of Bond Street and Oxford Street.
