Spaghetti Bolowhatta? The Real Bolognese Revealed (Great British Chefs)
Let’s get to the meat of the matter. There’s no such thing as spaghetti Bolognese. Or, at least, there isn’t in the actual city of Bologna. You would do well to seek Bolognese inspiration for its rich tradition in pasta making. It’s a deliciously saucy city too and one which rightly lays claim as the original home of a large variety of food products – just not spag bol. Bologna and the region of Emilia-Romagna have as prominent a cuisine and as celebrated a food culture as anywhere in the world. Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway: Torino Unshrouded
Initially pursuing an opportunity to visit Torino (perhaps better known to some of my readers by its anglicized name, Turin) was what eventually led to me coming up with my the full blown “Ham Highway” itinerary. The city was (and I assume still is) keen to have bloggers visit to write about the city. There was a chocolate festival scheduled for when I knew I would be able to go, and I was pretty sure I could get a commission to write about it. The more I looked into Torino, the more I of a hunch I had that it would be the sort of “content rich” place that I’d enjoy checking out. Continue reading

A Visit to Jude’s Ice Cream Dairy (Great British Chefs)
Yes, there is a Jude (Judith actually) behind the scenes of this Hampshire-based premium ice cream maker. But the story of her eponymous treats is really about her husband, Theo. Finding himself suddenly and unexpectedly on the other side of a career in banking, Theo had time on his hands along with a bit of capital and a garage in which to tinker. He also had the acumen to realise a huge gap in the British ice cream market and the pluck to go about filling it. Continue reading

Sunday Lunch: Paradise by Way of Kensal Green

Review: Fingers and Thumbs’ Seafood Shack
Last night I paid a repeat visit to a repeat opening of Fingers and Thumbs’ Seafood Shack. Yum. Following ye olde ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix’ methodology, I kept with what I knew I’d love: a big ole pot of lobster cooked with juicy prawns, mussels, clams, veggies and more. Complimented by n ample stack of rustic bread with home made cocktail sauce (which could have been a little better honestly), washed down with a few Kronenbourgs, and rounded off by a scoop of especially tasty vanilla fudge ice cream – it was a fun and filling meal. The damage? Around £55 total for two. Continue reading
