The idea behind our expedition was to get us city slickers close ‘to the wild seas of Skye, where Talisker is made, without leaving our Southern shores’. And it was kind of a fun trip all in all. If soggy conditions weren’t necessarily ideal for grabbing wild grub on the beach, the stormy weather and massive waves crashing over Lyme Regis’s famed Cobb harbour wall were evocative and certainly illustrative of why authors Jane Austen and John Fowles placed the desperate heroines of their books in such a dramatic setting. Of course, once off the beach and warmed up in Hix Oyster & Fish House with its sweeping views over the rooftops of Lyme Regis, the undulating sea, dreary horizon, angry skies and blustery winds effectively created a mood most conducive to sipping some smoky single malt from the west Scotland island of Skye.
