Have you ever tried SunGold kiwifruit? I recently discovered them at a #BreakfastBling event hosted by New Zealand kiwi brand Zespri and so loved what I was eating that I’ve been adding them to most of my morning meals since.
As the name implies, these SunGold kiwis are golden, not green. Also unlike typical green kiwis the skin isn’t all that fuzzy. So, you actually don’t have to peel the fruits and you can eat the skin quite easily (and get all that extra dietary fibre and nutrition when you do). They’re one of the most nutrient dense fruits. One SunGold has more vitamin C than an orange, contains high levels of potassium, folate and actinidin (a “protease enzyme unique to kiwifruit that helps us to digest several food proteins”).
They’re super tasty too – milder and less acidic than green kiwis – and go great in a smoothie, such as the below recipe I’ve been making for myself since the Breakfast Bling tasting I attended. But more than bringing ‘bling’ to what I like to eat, the SunGolds seem to add a little sunshine to my meal (and a sunnier disposition to my attitude).
SUNGOLD SMOOTHIE Yum
Ingredients (for one smoothie)
1 SunGold Kiwifruit (no need to peel but you might want to chop off the stem end);
2 Bananas;
2 heaping tablespoons of peanut butter (I prefer crunchy);
2 heaping tablespoons of hulled hemp seeds (check out PlanetHemp);
1 tablespoon of sesame seeds;
1 tablespoon of flax seeds;
¾ pint of “milk” (I love Oatly’s oat drink chilled, especially with this recipe).
Method
Blend together. Pour it in a glass. Drink.
Serve
You might consider throwing some granola in for added texture – or whatever else you like to add to your smoothies.
