In my last post about my time in Jamaica, it might have seemed like I was pooh-poohing the idea of lounging around at a resort. Perish the thought! I only meant to say there’s so much to see and do that isolating yourself to the confines of some closed-off retreat would keep you from enjoyed many of the things that make Jamaica such a fascination destination. Nevertheless, there’s nothing wrong with indulging in a little rarefied rest and relaxation now and again. And I’m glad I got to do just that in fine Caribbean style for a few nights of my Cane to Cocktail tour at the splendorous Half Moon resort in Montego Bay.
Set along a two-mile stretch of pristine Montego Bay coastline, Half Moon luxury resort is within easy reach of Sangster International Airport but feels as removed from it – or any concept of hustle and bustle – as can be.
Driving around the manicured grounds of this tropical beachside retreat at a leisurely pace in my own golf cart, taking advantage of the facilities at the sumptuous 68,000 square foot Fern Tree Spa (and receiving and ultra relaxing Awaken Deep Tissue Massage while there), hitting up the resort’s humidor for a Cohiba – these all rank as highlights of my visit – and my year thusfar. Indeed, I could do with another dip in the spa’s waterfall-fed hot tub.
My room was a spacious master suite in one of the 31 Royal Villas spread (along with another 197 rooms and suites of varying size) across the resort’s 400 primly kept acres. Steps from the beach and with its own pool, the villa (shared with a handful of other journos on the tour) came with its own cook, butler and housekeeper. Views, amenities and food were all delicious. The resort’s upscale Sugar Mill restaurant is considered by many to be the best restaurant in Jamaica – and it did not disappoint during my dine there.
One night we had our dinner catered by local favourite Scotchie’s Jerk Centre. Not just a preferred local’s haunt, Scotchie’s is the top ranked restaurant on TripAdvisor for all of Montego Bay. I think there are Scotchie’s outlets across Jamaica. The jerk pork and fish were awesome.
Whatever you like to do for your leisure or whatever the occasion (family holiday, honeymoon, winter getaway), Half Moon aims to please. Golf, polo, diving, kayaking, swimming with dolphins … it was pretty amazing to see the range of activities guests there can do. Only around for a too short stay, I was more than content to kick back most of the time, drink some Appleton with my newfound journalist buddies and take in the beauty around me.
More to come … and yes I’ll actually get to talking about the rum soon – I promise!
